'Ashewo No Be Work' for prostitutes convicted by Lagos court

Four commercial sex workers popularly called 'ashewo', have been convicted by a Lagos State Mobile Court sitting at Ogba, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, for prostitution and public nuisance after they were caught by men of the state Special Task Force on August 31, at about 1 am in the Abule Egba area of the state.

The ladies whose names were given as Rashidat Ibrahim, 19, Sarah Mohammed, 24, Chinyere Aguogo, 24 and Mary Eze, 25, were said to be nabbed in a black spot soliciting for customers.

The prosecution revealed that the ladies had formed the habit of showcasing themselves very late in the night at a particular black spot and causing a nuisance to members of the public.

The ladies who pleaded guilty to the charges, begged for leniency, claiming they had no means of livelihood, hence their participation in prostitution.

The court therefore fined them N5,000 each, and warned that they risked being sent to prison if they are ever caught again.
